Etsy Keyword Research: The Honest Guide
Most keyword advice for Etsy is either vague ("use good keywords!") or built on numbers nobody can verify. This guide sticks to what is actually true: how Etsy search ranks listings, what you can measure for real, and a workflow that finds keywords you can win.
How Etsy search actually ranks you
Etsy has described its ranking factors publicly. Boiled down, a listing's position comes from two things:
- Query matching โ how well your title, tags, attributes, and description match what the buyer typed. Exact matches in titles and tags carry the most weight.
- Listing quality โ Etsy's estimate of whether buyers will click and buy: conversion history, reviews, shop track record, and how fresh the listing is.
There is no trick that overrides these two. Good SEO on Etsy means matching real buyer language on listings that convert.
The uncomfortable truth about "search volume"
What you can measure honestly, straight from Etsy's own public data:
- Competing listings โ how many listings match the keyword. Fewer competitors = easier to rank.
- Favorites and views on top listings โ real buyer interest signals.
- Prices buyers actually pay for that keyword.
- Tag frequency โ which phrases the current winners all use.
A keyword with 2,000 competing listings and strong favorites is a better bet than a keyword with 200,000 listings, even if some tool claims the bigger one gets "more searches."
The long-tail strategy (why it works)
Short keywords ("candle", "wall art") have brutal competition. Long-tail phrases ("soy candle vanilla birthday gift for her") have fewer competitors and โ crucially โ buyers who type them know exactly what they want, so they convert better. For a new or small shop, ranking #5 for ten long-tail phrases beats ranking #500 for one big keyword.
A keyword workflow that works in 2026
- 1. Start with Etsy's own suggestions. Type a seed word into Etsy's search bar and note the autocomplete phrases โ that is literal buyer language.
- 2. Check the competition. Search each phrase and note how many results appear. Under ~5,000 results with visible sales is promising; over 50,000 is a long fight.
- 3. Study the winners. Open the top 5โ10 listings. What tags do they share? What words repeat in their titles? Those phrases earned their rank.
- 4. Build your list. Aim for one primary phrase plus 10โ12 supporting phrases per listing. Keep them specific and buyer-flavored.
- 5. Place them deliberately. Primary phrase at the start of your title, supporting phrases across your 13 tags (see our tags guide).
What to avoid
- Keyword stuffing โ repeating "candle candle candle" reads as spam to buyers and doesn't help ranking.
- Irrelevant trending tags โ tagging "taylor swift" on an unrelated product misleads buyers, hurts conversion, and can get the listing suppressed.
- Chasing only big keywords โ see the long-tail section. Win small first.
- Set-and-forget SEO โ re-check your main keywords every few months; competition shifts with seasons.
