Etsy Titles That Get the Click
Your title does two jobs: tell Etsy's search what the listing is, and convince a scrolling human to tap it. Most sellers write for one and forget the other. Here's the structure that does both.
The 140-character reality
Etsy allows 140 characters in a title โ but most buyers never see all of them. On mobile search results, roughly the first 55 characters are visible before the title truncates. So the rule is simple:
The structure that works
Think of a title as four blocks, in order:
- Block 1 โ primary keyword (first ~55 chars): the exact phrase buyers search. "Personalized Gold Name Necklace"
- Block 2 โ key descriptors: material, style, differentiator. "Dainty Custom Jewelry, 14k Gold Filled"
- Block 3 โ occasion / recipient: "Mothers Day Gift for Her, Bridesmaid Gift"
- Block 4 โ alternates: synonyms or secondary phrases you couldn't fit in tags.
โ Weak: Beautiful Handmade Necklace Lovely Gift Idea Pretty Jewelry for Women
The weak version wastes its visible characters on filler words ("beautiful", "lovely") that no buyer ever types into search.
Readable for humans, rich for search
- Separate phrases with commas or pipes โ "Gold Hoop Earrings | Dainty Everyday Jewelry" scans better than a run-on string.
- Don't repeat a word three times to "rank harder" โ it doesn't work and it looks spammy to buyers.
- Title case is fine ("Gold Name Necklace"), ALL CAPS is not โ it reads as shouting.
- Answer the buyer's silent questions: what is it, who is it for, what is it made of, when would I give it?
Update titles seasonally
A listing that sells year-round can still borrow seasonal traffic. Six weeks before Christmas, "Christmas Gift for Mom" belongs near the front of relevant titles; in January it should move back. Small, scheduled title refreshes are one of the cheapest traffic levers on Etsy.
Quick checklist
- Primary keyword in the first 55 characters?
- Every word earns its place โ no filler adjectives?
- Readable with commas/pipes, not a keyword pile?
- Occasion or recipient included where relevant?
- Under 140 characters, no ALL CAPS?
